Calling all Tree Huggers! Celebrate Earth Day with Philadelphia Zoo this Sunday! All #EarthDay long, watch animals receive special recycled treats, and enjoy games and crafts in the Earth Day Activity Zone! Bring a pair of old sneakers to be recycled and be entered to win a special animal encounter at KidZooU! Thank you to Greater Philadelphia Chapter of AAZK for hosting the event! #ItsAlwaysGreenInPhilly
Happy #BatAppreciationDay! Have you ever wondered where Philadelphia Zoo gets the blood to feed our vampire bat colony? The Block and Bridle club at @pennstate collects the blood from cattle at the university. The blood is then frozen and delivered to the Zoo. This partnership serves as a fund raiser for the club and we receive clean blood from humanely raised and housed animals!
Forty years ago, there were less than 100 fruit bats in the world. Throughout the last two decades, Philadelphia Zoo has partnered with the Rodrigues Environmental Educator Project to positively impact the survival of this species including: regenerated forests, less drought and erosion and more. Today the Rodrigues fruit bat population is now estimated to be nearly 20,000!
Happy National Volunteer Week! Last year, we welcomed nearly 700 volunteers that served 100,000 hours at Philadelphia Zoo! We are so grateful for our volunteers and their commitment to connecting people with wildlife! Thank you!
