Happy Valentines Day from Grand Canyon National Park. - During the winter, cold weather makes cacti deficient in phosphorous, turning them purple. Phosphorous is an essential nutrient for growth, so plants constrict their growth during the short, cold days of winter. This happens with most plants, not just cacti. These cacti are a type of Prickly Pear, from the Opuntia family. Opuntia engelmannii is the most common type of cacti at Grand Canyon. The view is from Plateau Point, January 3, 2018. “I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn’t show.” – Andrew Wyeth #GrandCanyon #winter #Arizona #backcountry (Image description: the frozen surface of a little creek reflects subtle shades of blue.
