2 PM update to February 19, 2018, 2 PM We have received about an inch of snow on the South Rim. Park roads are snowpacked and icy. If you are driving please be careful. A cold & windy morning here at with a winter storm passing through. Happy Valentines Day from Grand Canyon National Park. - During the winter, cold weather makes cacti deficient in phosphorous, turning them purple. Phosphorous is an essential nutrient for growth, so plants constrict their growth during the short, cold days of winter. This happens with most plants, not just cacti. These cacti are a type of Prickly Pear, from the Opuntia family. Opuntia engelmannii is the most common type of cacti at Grand Canyon. The view is from Plateau Point, January 3, 2018.
