This finger of amber light reaching up from the horizon is known as a sun pillar. All that’s needed for the subtle optical effect to appear is for the air to be filled with tiny, tumbling icy crystals that reflect a glitter path of sunlight toward the viewer. With no obvious high clouds here to produce the effect, this sun pillar is likely caused by the low, sparkling, ice-crystal fog known as diamond dust. It forms in very cold, dry conditions like these near the Arctic coast of Alaska. In the winter months, the Sun barely rises above the horizon. The upward finger of a sun pillar is the only way it can reach upwards, as if its anticipating the upward shift in its path as winter eventually gives way to spring. . A Sun pillar produced by diamond dust spotted over Alpine, Alaska, US, by ‘JamesH’. . Contributed by Elliot Dowding. .
