The Van Allen belts are a collection of charged particles, gathered in place by Earth's magnetic field. The inner belt, composed predominantly of protons, and the outer belt, mostly electrons, They are sometimes swell up enough to expose satellites in low-Earth orbit to damaging radiation. They are named the Van Allen Belts, after James Van Allen, the scientist who led the charge designing the instruments and studying the radiation data. #scientist - Credit: nasa

Happy ! Here’s a little throwback to me doing what I do best: browsing Reddit at work. (I guess I’m also promoting science, or something like that.) But for real: I remember hearing about the Human Genome Project as a kid and being astounded by the idea that such a thing could even be possible. Now I get to work alongside some of the folks who made it happen every day. Particular shoutout on this day to the women and diverse groups in science - we wouldn’t be celebrating today without folks like Rosalind Franklin paving the way.

George Washington Carver (1860s-January 5, 1943) was an American botanist and inventor; born into slavery and went on to become one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time as well as teacher at the Tuskegee Institute. He is best known for the many uses he devised for the peanut. He devised over one hundred products using one major crop-the peanut including dyes, plastics and gasoline. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops, such peanut and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life. . . . #scientist
